Chandratal

Chandratal

Chandratal, which literally translates to Moon Lake, is situated in the breathtakingly beautiful Spiti Valley. The lake is also the source of Chanda river and used to be a place for Tibetan and Ladakhi traders travelling to Kullu Valley. The crystal clear water of the lake surrounded by barren mountains of Spiti Valley are the perfect combination that make you forget about everything else in the world. The trek is small as most of the distance is covered via road following which the adventurers go on a day long hike to reach the Chandratal Lake. Overnight camping at the site is an out-of-the-world experience. The trek is ideal for those who are looking to reach high altitude without having to walk for many days.

Reporting at the basecamp in Manali.2

Day 2

Today, we are going to kick start our adventurous journey to Chandratal. Our destination today is Chattru at a height of 13000ft., around 32 kms from Rohtang Top. This small distance makes people believe that it’s a cakewalk but make no mistakes. You need to keep it includes a steep ascent to Rohtang Pass first, then the slush and traffic towards Rohtang top, then a nightmarish journey on Gramphoo Batal stretch. Once we are on the way to Gramphoo, we will cross long traffic snarls afterwards, the heaven rises. The steep ascent to Rohtang Pass is a route which is joined by another route – Leh-Manali Highway. If you would observe it for a moment then you might skip a beat. Gradually, greenery starts to disappear and dryness starts to appear as you progress, you will cross lots of small as well as a big waterfall- in the local language, they are called ‘nahllas’. Another 1 hour from Gramphu to Chatru, because of the pebbled road. Once reached, enjoy the serenity of this small village. Take leisure walks around the village. You will find a couple of dhabas- enjoy tea and the must-have ‘maggi’. Later, dance away the night while having piping hot dinner and enjoy the camping experience in the middle of nowhere.3

Day 3

Wake up a bit early to soak up the imagery that you would see. Clouds hovering over the top of the mountains. Today, we will embark our towards the ‘Moon Lake’, one of the breathtaking views that you would see in your lifetime. Remember this journey is not a smooth one. After an arduous an hour and a half journey, you will reach Batal. Take a pit stop and enjoy the change in the terrain. From Batal to Chandratal Lake, It’s a bumpy ride to say the least with a couple of running streams to cross. The flow of water in the streams will depend on the timing of the journey. The enjoyable journey up to the camping area near Chandratal lake.

A couple of years back, camping was allowed near the lake but now it isn’t the case. The distance between the camping area and the Chandra Tal Lake is 3km-4km. You can either trek or go there in the same vehicle. And here comes the moment when you witness the Chandratal- the“Moon Lake” at an altitude of 4,300 meters, this lake is the source of Chandra River and its name “Chandra” is believed to be derived from its moon-like shape. Stay there for a bit and explore the nearby hills, if there is time. After sometime come back to your camps. Enjoy the starlit night. During the night, the sky lights up with countless starts and is perfect for some excellent night captures, or just sitting ideal looking at the sky and getting wooed by it. For anyone who is into sky gazing, this is a perfect spot to do so.4
